Tip #8: Develop your functional requirements
Functional requirements deal with the details of what information is needed via reporting out of the system and how it gets input into the system. Each employee or department group should identify:
- How does information come to me?
- How do I process and report information?
- What is most important about that information?
- What works well about how I handle that information?
- What could be done better, faster, and easier?
Identifying functional requirements in writing clarifies each user’s needs. If work on this document is completed before selecting software vendors, the information is prepared once, it’s consistent, and the resulting responses from vendors provide an apples-to-apples comparison.
