While Microsoft has not officially confirmed the release date of the next version of Microsoft Dynamics, they have stated that the next release will ship roughly after Convergence and before June. Microsoft decided on the release name of GP 2013 R2 rather than SP3 due to the size and features scheduled to be in the release. Some of the new features include new and improved requisition capabilities, a new workflow framework, the first phase of updated identity management, and a new procurement app.
A decision that faces all customers, when is the appropriate time to upgrade. Going through an upgrade is no small task, and needs to be carefully planned. Some basic questions, like:
- When is it a good time for my business?
- When is it a good time for my employees?
- Are the new features important or critical to my business?
- When does my current release expire?
Microsoft posts their product lifecycle on-line and it is worth visiting as part of your upgrade analysis.
Another important question to ask, “What effect will this upgrade have on my 3rd party modules?” Often a 3rd party product is embedded into the solution and occasionally the customer may not even release they have this added functionality.
These and many other concerns should be addressed with your Partner. An experienced Partner will walk you through the pros and cons of an upgrade and help you determine if and when the time is right. Do your homework, work with a good Partner, and don’t be afraid to “just say no” if the time isn’t right for you and your Company.
